Before You Say Goodbye: Strategies for Collegiate Parents

For the past year (and maybe longer) college bound high school seniors and their parents have been reading catalogues, studying websites, visiting campuses, attending open houses, negotiating financial aid packages, and making decisions about which college to attend. In the coming weeks, these PAPAs (Post-Adolescent Pre-Adults) will arrive at their college of choice and take the first steps on their collegiate journey. And like they have been for 18 years or so, their parents are right behind them making sure they are protected and cared for. Who can blame these “helicopter parents” who attempt to influence and control what happens as their child enters college? After all, this millennial generation of students is one of the most protected, sheltered and made-to-feel-special group of PAPAs ever to enter higher education. Much of the credit for this phenomenon lies with the baby boomer generation of parents who have been highly involved with their children's well-being, education and activities since birth, have high expectations for their children in college, and are more than willing to intervene on their behalf.
